On December 8, 1977, Duane and Clea Perrin bought a beautiful 320-acre property nestled on Highland Valley Road in Escondido, California. After naming it Perrin Oak Ranch, they began developing the ranch in 1980. This led them to plant over 5,000 Hass avocado trees across 55 acres.
The fruits of their labor showed great potential and the Perrins knew it was definitely the start of something new. However, the beauty of the ranch did not only lie in its potential. The entire ranch itself is a picturesque location that takes your breath away.
Perrin Oak Ranch resides 24 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and the land it stands on is elevated from hundreds to thousands of feet high from the ground. Because of this, you will be greeted with a rich blanket of fog throughout the vineyard, making for majestical mornings. It is definitely a sight you would want to wake up to.
“Born from the Ashes, Raised on the Vine”
But then the Perrin Oak Ranch encountered a tragic event along the way. On October 22, 2007, the tragedy of the Witch Creek Fire struck the southeast part of the San Diego Wild Animal Park, located on the other side of the San Pasqual Valley.
As the fire fueled itself by over 100 mph winds, it spread up to Bandy Canyon and created a huge firestorm. The fire consumed the majority of Perrin Oak Ranch and almost took the life of our owner, Duane “D.O.” Perrin while he was sleeping. Thankfully, Duane got to safety in time.
The fire destroyed structures, farm equipment and, most of all, about 3,000 avocado trees. The only figures left standing after the fire were the valiant speckled boulders of granite.
From that tragic memory, Duane decided to rise up from the ashes and start over. Instead of re-planting avocado trees, he decided to plant wine grapes. Through that move, Speckle Rock Vineyards and DG Cellars were born.
Currently, the ranch has more than 23 acres of vineyard composed of Grenache, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Carmenere, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Meunier, Clairette Blanche, and Falanghina grapes. Each year we target to plant more acreage to reach our 40-acre goal and ultimately yield 4,000 cases each year and continue to be one of the top vineyards in San Diego, complete with wine tastings, events and much, much more.
The inspiring story of how our vineyards came to be is how our slogan was inspired: “Born from the Ashes, Raised on the Vine.” Because that’s just what we did. We rose from the ashes of a great tragedy. We now face the future with our vines in one hand and a glass of chilled Falanghina in the other.
We are proud to offer a unique varietal selection composed of 100% estate grown grapes including Carmenere, Clairette Blanche, Falanghina, Grenache, Merlot, Petite Syrah, Pinot Meunier, Sangiovese, and Tempranillo.
Every bottle of Speckle Rock Vineyards and DG Cellars wine is produced and bottled on-site. The recently completed 4,000 square foot winery is fully equipped to produce wine from start to finish. It features five Sonoma Cast Stone concrete wine tanks, French Oak barrels, and American Oak barrels, all surrounded by the latest stainless steel equipment.
