Main Differences between Vineyards and Wineries

It’s hard to resist a glass of good wine, that’s for sure. Every year, millions of people who love drinking vineyard wine dream of visiting some of the best vineyards and wineries in the world to see where this immaculate beverage comes from. But the lingering question is: what exactly is the difference between vineyards and wineries?

Vineyards and Wineries

A vineyard is a farm or plantation of any size that grows grapes that are made into wine. A vineyard may have its own winery where vineyard wine is produced from the grapes that it grows on its farm. But some vineyards may also not have their own winery because they are solely grape growers. This is why they sell their grapes to outside wineries that will produce their vineyard wine.

A winery is a production facility where grapes are made into wines. Many wineries have their own vineyards because it gives them control over the type of grapes they use for their vineyard wine. But you can also find several wineries around the world that outsource their grapes from local vineyards because they solely want to focus on producing wines. Some wineries also don’t have a vineyard because they produce wines from other fruits as well.

A vineyard that doesn’t have its own winery may supply its grapes to different wineries. This is why there are more vineyards than wineries because the biggest wine producers in the world usually have several vineyard suppliers.

Estate Winery

You might also encounter a term called estate winery, which is a business that creates wine exclusively from the grapes that it grows in its own land. You will see these estate wineries in Napa Valley or Bordeaux and they are becoming more popular because of the accessibility of the grapes to the wineries and the quality control that the company can impose to ensure that its wines are made only from the best raw materials.

You can visit both a vineyard and a winery. In fact, there are a lot of winery and vineyard tours in different countries around the world. The only difference is that when you visit a vineyard, you will typically see acres of land covered with grapes and you will get to sample some of those grapes if they are in season. But since not all vineyards and wineries, you can’t expect to sample wine there. A winery, however, will have wine tasting as part of its tour. Your itinerary will typically include a tour of the vineyard if there is one, a little class about winemaking and of course, a wine tasting session where you will be introduced to the different types of vineyard wine created by the winery that you’re visiting.
