Escondido Vineyards Are San Diego’s Hidden Gems

Getting to Know Escondido


San Diego has a long and rich history in wine production. Father Junipero Serra planted the first vineyards in the county and it was believed that he cultivated eight more vineyards towards the north of San Diego along the Mission Trail. Today, San Diego vineyards are flourishing across the county and some of the best ones are in the city of Escondido.



Located 30 miles northeast of San Diego, Escondido is nestled in a long valley making it the perfect place for growing grapes used in making wines. The history of winemaking in the area dates back to the 1800s when the first Muscat grapes were planted by local landowners. In fact, some of the first wine grapes in California were grown and pressed in Escondido, making it one of the pioneers of the craft in the state.



The Wineries at Escondido


Through a San Diego County ordinance passed in 2010, San Diego vineyards were allowed to host public tasting rooms to help local wineries gain more recognition in the market. Escondido was one of the cities that stepped up and today; the wineries in the region offer more than 20 diverse tasting experiences that range from tasting rooms to beautiful hilltop terraces. Here, people can learn about the history of Escondido wines, the stories behind the vineyards and of course, sample some of the best bottles that the region has to offer.



One of the best places to experience San Diego vineyards at their finest is at Speckle Rock Vineyards. Located in the Perrin Oak Ranch, this vineyard sits atop Highland Valley Road offering a 1200-foot elevation with perfect views and good wines to match. Its winery spans over 4,000 square foot and features five Sonoma Cast stone concrete tanks.



The Wines of Escondido


Escondido offers many varietals of wine. The classic Sauvignon Blanc and Rose, for instance, can be sampled at Speckle Rock Vineyards. Other wineries in the region also offer Malbec, Muscat, Chardonnay, Barbera and Cabernet Franc wines. Falanghina wine, which is originally from Italy can also be sampled at the wineries here along with the classic red and white wine varieties that enthusiasts enjoy the most. With such a huge wine selection, any wine lover will never be disappointed in visiting Escondido for a wine tasting event.
